Model United Nations
Mrs. Kate Richtsmeier – Advisor
“Diplomacy is the art of letting someone have your way.” ~ Ambrose Bierce
The primary task of Model United Nations is educational, fostering interest in foreign relations, research, debate, and diplomacy. There are two levels of simulation and role-playing in Model UN. The first is that the delegates are playing the parts of nations in the United Nations following the rules and procedures of the organization. Second, the students learn how and why nations of the world interact with each other and how the UN affects international relations.
Each school year the Clear Lake delegation attends all three state Model United Nations conferences including the one regional meeting in Mason City in September, the two day Governor’s Iowa Youth Symposium on the United Nations in Des Moines in October, and the three day State Model United Nations Conference at UNI in Cedar Falls in April. Model United Nations began in the state of Iowa in 1964 with the Clear Lake High School delegation beginning operation in the fall of 1986.
Dress Code
The dress code for an Iowa High School Model United Nations is that of standard business wear or business casual. We ask for this dress code to be enforced by the faculty, and it will be strictly monitored by the Sergeant at Arms. Punishment for failure to meet the dress code requirements will be left to the discretion of the Sergeant at Arms and the Secretariat members within that committee room.
STANDARD BUSINESS WEAR FOR MEN:
This is composed of a suit, which is an ensemble composed of a pair of trousers with a jacket. Typically, a suit is paired with a long-sleeved shirt and a tie. Long sleeved shirts are considered dressier than short-sleeved and are appropriate even in the warmer months. However, a short-sleeved shirt, and any kind of tie or lack thereof, will be acceptable as well. It’s important to note that these clothes should not be baggy or too tight, but an appropriate fit. Wear dress shoes and a belt. Athletic shoes, sandals, and hiking boots are inappropriate.
STANDARD BUSINESS WEAR FOR WOMEN:
Women can wear casual pants or skirts. Neither should be tight. For the most business-like appearance, pants should be creased and tailored; neither extreme of tight or flowing. A woman’s skirt should come at least to her knees while she is standing. While she is seated, her thighs should be covered. Slits in the skirt should be in moderation, and should not come very high. In addition, tailored shirts or blouses, tailored knit sweaters and sweater sets are appropriate business casual choices for women. Fit should not be tight, as showing cleavage is not appropriate at a business occasion.
