Unit #4 Targets
1. You will know the vocabulary associated with this unit and how each word connects to the important ideas.
2. You will understand what led to the decline of Europe at the beginning of the Middle Ages and be able to describe in detail what Europe was like at that time.
3.You will understand the role of the Kingdom of the Franks in Europe and the important leaders of Clovis, Charles Martel, and Charlemagne and their connection to Christianity.
4. You will understand the concepts of Feudalism and Manor System including why it developed, how each worked, vocabulary associated with each, and what impact they had on Europe.
5. You will understand the role of Christianity in daily life, economy, and politics of Europe in the early Middle Ages and why they had the power they did.
6. You will understand the economic and other changes that took place at the end of the Early Middle Ages and the impact they had on Europe including the agricultural revolution, revival of trade, commercial revolution, and social changes.
7. You will anaylze the economic, social, and political transitions that took place between the Early and the High Middle Ages to gain a clearer picture of how the Middle Ages progressed.
8. You will analyze the circumstances surrounding the struggle for power between monarchs and the nobles and church in England from the Early to the High Middle Ages and beyond.
9. You will analyze the circumstances surrounding the struggle for power between monarchs and the nobles and church in France from the Early to the High Middle Ages and beyond.
10. You will the circumstances surrounding the struggle for power between monarchs and the nobles and church in the Holy Roman Empire from the Early to the High Middle Ages and beyond.
11.You will understand the circumstances surrounding the Crusades and the impact the Crusades had on Europe and the
Muslim World.
12. You will understand the time of crisis known as the Black Death and analyze its impact on Europe and the world.
13.You will understand the time of crisis known as the Hundred Years' War and analyze its impact on Europe and the world.
14. You will understand the cultural development during the Middle Ages in Europe and the impact they had on Europe and the World.
15. You will understand the differences between Europe and the rest of the world during the Middle Ages. (Byzantine Empire, Russia, Africa, and Asia)
16. You will be able to identify on a map the topics and places discussed in this unit.
17.. You will understand the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire which was what remained from the Roman Empire, including Emperor Justinian, Constantinople, the Hagia Sophia, the split in the Christian church, and the fall to the Ottoman Turks.
18. You will understand the rise of Russia and the influence that the Byzantine Empire and the Mongols had on them.
19. You will understand the rise of Islam in the Middle East and the dominance of the Ottoman Empire.
20. You will understand the great cultures of Africa and how they gained prominence.
21. You will understand the dynasties of China after the Han including the Tang, Song, Yuan, and the Ming and their impact on China (Isolation and foot binding)
22. You will analyze the impact of the Silk Roads connecting the West to China, including how it worked and Marco Polo.
23. You will understand the cultures of Japan and Korea and the links between them and China.
